BW: Outsourcing Heads To the Outskirts

This is what really makes a difference to a wider India. So far, growth has been confined to a few cities and causing chaos in terms of infrastructure. Its quite natural extension of oursourcing to go to rural areas, any corner of the world infact. The growth must go to Rural areas, to bring IT to everyone in India. And this is a big and hard step forward, but worth every penny and second spent.Location is not important for most functions of any IT work, and doesn't make sense to do it only in a city. I believe we have talent every where, and with littel tuning and training, we can leverage vast resources of Rural India. If MNCs move to India for cost advantage, why not move it further to Rural India where the Cost Advantage becomes a much bigger advantage. Not just that, it would bring entire country on to a similar level of growth and expowerment. I do not think at this point, there is any issue of Quality of work that can be done in Rural areas.  Its as good as what can be done…

TCS hits US $1B mark in a Single Quarter

TCS, the Indian IT Power house reportedly hit US $1B revenue in  a single quarter ending with December of 2006. And is on its way to hit its best in Annual revenues. INDIA's most valuable technology company, Tata Consultancy Services, is on its way to a record $US4 billion ($5 billon) annual turnover after notching sales of $US1.1 billion in a powerhouse December 2006 quarter. The results, including a quarterly net profit of $US252 million, were above estimates. TCS, which is controlled by the diversified Tata Group through its Tata Sons holding company, said revenue jumped more than 40 percent from a year earlier. It also reported closing five big multi-year deals worth $US450 million during the quarter, including one for $US90 million with Australian airline Qantas covering application development and support.
It said at least another 10 big deals - each above $US50 million - were in the order pipeline. Unveiling the results in Mumbai earlier this week, TCS chief executive S. Ram…

Nokia Goes USB For Charging

The Nokia CA-100 allows for charging your Nokia device while using your laptop or pc.  The CA-100 is compatible with 2.0 mm charger connector of compatible Nokia devices such as the newer Nseries. The Nokia CA-70 allows for charging as well as PC Suite connectivity and data transfer.  The CA-70 is compatible with 3.5-mm charger connector on devices such as the 6630, 6600 but can be used with  the Nokia Charger Adapter CA-44 to charge enhancements that have the smaller 2-mm charger connector such as the newer devices. The functions available when using the cable depend on your Nokia device and the PC software that you use with it (for example, the Nokia PC Suite).              CA-70 supports the USB 2.0 specification. The actual data transfer speed achieved depends on the phone, used services and network properties.Source: Darla Mack: Nokia's In…

Backup Your Data Online - Dell’s New Service

It has been a serious problem for a while for many of us to backup data from devices, primarily Laptops. Mostly to survive any crash on harddisks, which is quite typical these days with heavy applications wearing out and challenging the limits of harddisks. Another reason for having a backup is to migrate to a new laptop with ease.At work, I use a network based service, where complete image of my laptop including all installations and data are backed up every now and then on to a network based server. So even if I loose everything on my laptop for some reason, a new laptop can be brought to the exact same configuration with all those applications and files within minutes.AppleBut at a personal level, the solution is not that easy. Apple has first (to my knowledge) announced such a feature part of OS X to do it automatically without user having setup anything. Just connect a new storage device and in  a few clicks your personal backup service is ready. Windows Home Server and HP MediaS…

Why did Bharti Airtel Reverse-OutSource?

Everybody wondered Why Bharti Airtel oursourced to IBM. Though in later press announcements and discussions, they conveyed a message that 'IBM is an Indian company' and all that spin, but the real reason is lack of capability and confidence in India's own outsourcing giants.Well, Sunil Mittal says it all, why they did it. What's truly innovative about Bharti's approach is that it reverses the stereotype about outsourcing - that it's something Indian firms do for big U.S. and European multinationals. Mittal says he never seriously considered solving his growth problems by partnering with Indian firms. "I can't risk it," he says. "They've never done this kind of thing. They're new, I'm new."Source: Asia businessman of the year: Sunil Mittal, Bharti Airtel - January 22, 2007India’s Bharti outsources to IBM in a $100 Million dealWhen you hear the word ‘outsourcing’, which country comes to your mind? I bet, it is India. Indi…

The Big Six Challenged by Indian Tigers

Indian Software Services companies have been challenging the Big Six outsourcing companies for a while, some of them infact keeping them as Role Models. The current reports are saying that they have succeeded to an extent and on the way to make their dreams a Sound Business Reality. The so-called 'Big Six' outsourcing companies (Accenture, ACS, CSC, EDS, HP and IBM) are winning a decreasing proportion of those deals valued at over US$50m, according to TPI.  Their share of the market globally by total contract value has fallen from 71 percent in 2002 to 46 percent in 2006.Those service providers based in India, such as Wipro, Tata and Infosys, are reaping the benefits of the trend towards single-process and specialist deals. These providers, alongside the 'Big Five' in Europe as well as other smaller and niche providers, are encroaching on the Big Six's market share, TPI stated. ...."India-based providers are clearly considered an attractive and credible altern…

Evolutionary Smart Phones vs Revolutionary iPhone

I was amazed at the cool and elegant interface iPhone brings to Mobile Phones which are so far equipped with cluttered and bulky interfaces. For once, the whole Wireless Community is shocked at the amazing free style and quite intuitive interface Apple designed in iPhone. Many immediately reacted with natural tendency to find faults and failures to write it off as a fancy but useless phone or almost to that effect. There are two reasons for many people to do so. One to stand out from the crowd. Other genuine reason, I guess, is to hide their lack of Imagination and capability to design such an cool interface. Its a damn shock for a typical evolutionary mind, which boasts of incremental changes all its life so far and still got to be respected in the world as an innovative mind. I see it in many places, articles about Why iPhone would not succeed.Whatever they say, I truly believe that iPhone has truly reinvented the phone with a revolutionary interface. Whether iPhone succeeds in the …

Future Pervasive Mobile Applications Video

I came to know about this video about future of pervasive Communication Application that makes your Location relevant and irrelevant and adapts to your moving between devices and locations, while reading a blog entry at Martin's Mobile Technology Page. Here is the Video Link.   ..this interesting video which shows the vision of the Daidalus project for pervasive communication in the future. There is lots of talk in the industry lately on voice call continuity, i.e. switching a voice call between circuit and packet switched networks. The vision of the Daidalus project goes one step beyond and shows how a call could be switched between different networks and devices and how additional information such as video streams and textual information are automatically included in the call when the current device allows and the situation requires. The roots of this concept are also known as "rich call".Source: Martin's Mobile Technology Page: The Daidalus Project: Video On Perva…

Go Spicy! Stay Healthy!

I found another reason to go Spicy :-)))) To stay away from cancers.London, Jan 10 (IANS) A daily diet rich in spices may offer protection against cancer and other illnesses. This may be the reason, researchers say, why Indians suffer lower cases of many cancers. A chemical called capsaicin, which gives spicy food its kick, holds the key to the next generation of anti-cancer drugs, reported the online edition of Daily Mail. Timothy Bates and other researchers at the University of Nottingham found that capsaicin can kill cancer cells by directly targeting their energy source, indicating that people could control or prevent the onset of cancer by eating a diet rich in capsaicin. 'This is incredibly exciting and may explain why people living in countries like Mexico and India, who traditionally eat a diet that is very spicy, tend to have lower incidences of many cancers that are prevalent in the Western world,' Bates said. Researchers tested the compound in a laboratory on human…

Proto.in - High Expectations And Mixed Signals

Right from the moment I heard about Proto.in, I set my expectations very high and love to see them met in entirety. I truly believe in India becoming the Innovation Power house of the Flat world. And as mentioned in the words of Vijay Anand, what we really need to create that edge are solutions that are revolutionary rather than evolutionary and Proto.in will mark the beginning of the journey.
I believe what we need for this country is not evolution, but a revolution. This event will mark its initiation. -- Vijay Anand(Source)
I am not sure what is in store for me at Proto.in's first ever conference, but I was sadly surprised and shocked from mixed signals in announcements in the last 48 hours.

Following an announcement by Proto.in team last week about releasing initial short list of Companies participating in the first conference, I have been watching its blog eagerly with great expectations. For sure there was a big suprise. The team of Proto.in declared that the list won't be…

Proto.in Teaser - Realizing Dreams

Proto.in team hasn't yet released the final list of 45 Companies. Earlier in the week, the team has promised to release the list by end of 2nd Jan, 2007.  Talking about Proto, I have created this Teaser for Proto.in a while back (some time in Nov'06) and submitted to Youtube. I sent the URL to Proto team, particularly Vijay Anand wondering whether the teaser communicates the essense of  Proto.in spirit. Later on, I was caught up with work at office and a small project I have been working on and totally forgot about it. I inserted the video here: ( URL: http://youtube.com/watch?v=JWSrpPlxqIY)If I get some time this week, I would create some more teasers with the same theme of Realizing Dreams by Entrepreneurship.Technorati tags: , , , , ,
